Shanks is the captain of the Red Hair Pirates, he is commonly known as Red-haired Shanks or only Red Hair. He is one of the Four Emperors, the four pirates those rule the New World.
He is the one who inspired Luffy to become a pirate, he had given him his Straw Hat and promised to take it back when Luffy is a great pirate. The hat was given to shanks by Gol D. Roger, his old captain, when he was just an apprentice on the crew of the legendary King of the Pirates.
Shanks once visited the East Blue where he met Luffy, on a certain day Luffy was captured by some Mountain bandits, Shanks was rescuing him, but the bandit fled to the sea, suddenly a Sea King appeared and attacked them, at that moment Shanks lost his arm to the Sea King and saved Luffy.
The scar on his face was made by Teach, the only one known to have two Akuma no Mi. Ace, a member of Whitebeard's crew, went after Teach to get revenge for the death of a crewmate, Whitebeard would have sent him for revenge and Shanks had talked to Whitebeard trying to convince him he should stop Ace, but he refused.
Ace had been captured by the Marines and a war broke out, the greatest war since the Golden Age of Pirates, both Whitebeard and Ace were killed. Shanks was fighting Kaido the day before, but suddenly appeared at the war, saved Koby from being killed, and just stopped the war, challenging anyone who would like to continue to fight him and his crew.
